Rename a clip or edit its text

A clip's title replaces its text as its name in every list, and search finds it by that name. Text, code, link and colour clips can also have their text changed.

  1. In the dashboard, right-click a clip and choose Rename…, or select it and click the pencil in its details.
  2. Type a title, such as “Home address”, and click Save.

The title shows in the dashboard, the ⇧⌘V popup and the menu bar list. Pasting still pastes the clip's content, not its title. To remove a title, clear the field and save.

Edit the text

Right-click a text, code, link or colour clip and choose Edit…. Change the text under Content and click Save. Images and files can be renamed but not edited.

  • Smart quotes, smart dashes and auto-correct are off in the editor, so code, JSON and passwords stay exactly as you type them.
  • Maclip treats the saved text as a fresh copy: if you turn a link into plain text, the clip moves to Text, and sensitive text is detected again.
  • Saved formatting such as fonts and colours is dropped, because it belonged to the old text.
  • The editor also has Write with AI.
