How to fix grammar and rewrite text with Apple Intelligence on a Mac

Apple Intelligence can proofread and rewrite text on your Mac without sending it to a chatbot. Writing Tools is built into macOS and works in most places you type.

Updated

What you need

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
  • A macOS version with Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  • A supported language for Apple Intelligence.

Writing Tools, where you type

  1. Select the text you've written.
  2. Right-click and choose Writing Tools.
  3. Pick Proofread to fix spelling and grammar, or a rewrite such as Friendly, Professional or Concise. Summaries and lists are there too.

Writing Tools changes the text where it is. For plain spelling checks without Apple Intelligence, Edit → Spelling and Grammar → Check Document Now (⌘;) works in most apps.

Fix text you've copied, with Maclip

Writing Tools works on text you can select in an editable field. Maclip's Write with AI works on what you've copied: fix a message before pasting it into an app where Writing Tools doesn't appear, or tidy a note you copied an hour ago.

  • Open a text clip's Edit… sheet, or choose Write with AI… in its details.
  • Choose Fix Spelling & Grammar, Summarise, Make Shorter, Make Professional, Make Friendly or Turn into Bullet Points.
  • The result replaces the text in the editor, and nothing is saved until you click Save. Undo AI Change steps back.
  • It runs on your Mac with Apple Intelligence and needs macOS 26. See Write with AI.

Questions

Does Apple Intelligence send my text to Apple?

Writing Tools runs on your Mac for most requests. Apple says longer or more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute, Apple's own servers, which don't keep your data. Maclip's Write with AI uses only the on-device model.

Why don't I see Writing Tools on my Mac?

Apple Intelligence needs an Apple silicon Mac, a supported macOS version and language, and to be turned on in System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri. Some apps' text fields also don't offer Writing Tools.
