App rules: set how Maclip works in each app
An app rule holds the settings Maclip uses for one app. Copy settings act on what you copy in that app. Paste settings act on what Maclip pastes or types into it, including paste stacks and snippets.

Add a rule
- Open the dashboard and choose Rules in the icon bar.
- Click + above the app list and pick any app, or click Add next to a suggested one.
- Select the app. Its settings are listed on the right, under When you copy and When you paste or type.
- Turn settings on, or pick a value from their menus. Every other app at the bottom of the list shows the defaults.
The settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Don't save clips | Nothing copied in the app is saved, and snippets don't expand in it. Same list as Ignored Apps in Privacy settings. |
| Don't save images | Screenshots and images copied in the app are skipped. Text is still saved. |
| Save to board | Everything copied in the app goes straight onto the board you pick. |
| Add a tag | Every clip copied in the app gets the tag you type, so it's easy to find. |
| Pin automatically | Clips copied in the app are pinned. |
| Remove link tracking | Links copied in the app lose their trackers, even if the setting is off in Privacy. |
| Keep private | Its clips are never shared with AI apps or Spotlight, are hidden until you click Show, and are erased with other sensitive clips. |
| Erase clips after | Its clips are deleted for good after 1 minute to 1 week. Pinned clips and kept boards are spared. |
| Paste as | Keep formatting, Plain text or Markdown, for every paste into the app. |
| Expand snippets | Turn it off and abbreviations don't expand in the app, but its clips are still saved. |
Markdown turns headings, bold, italics, code, links and lists into their Markdown form. ⇧↵ in the ⌘⇧V panel always pastes plain text, whatever the rule.
